Where the Marmots Roam Free

While we thoroughly enjoyed the caverns at the base of the Alps on our first day in Grindelwald, Switzerland, we didn’t consider that much of an adventure. It only required us to walk down by a river and follow a trail out and around some incredibly gorgeous views. Every few steps or so, there was another new person, tethering us to a world that felt very touristy. But on our second day in Grindelwald, a rainy day, we went up our first gondola, up into the clouds and out several miles, well past the popularity of crowds.

With most of our other days remembered as unbearably hot for the clothes we had brought along (who would have thought shorts and 90+ degree weather for Switzerland?), this was a reasonably cool and breezy day, enough that the walk became memorable. We saw glaciers slowly melting, lakes that were calm and undisturbed, and perhaps most exciting of all, we saw marmots roaming free.
