Normally, the thought of waking up early enough to see the sunrise would be insane. But this morning offered the single best American travel experience I can remember. At about 4am, I shook off two hours of sleep, threw on a hat, and drove as fast as I could, east of Mount Rushmore through the South Dakota darkness. On repeat, I played “Berlin” for two hours, a song by If These Trees Could Talk (see below) and arrived at the edge of the Dakota Badlands as the sun was rising over the gorgeous canyons and mysterious creatures.
